Recession-Proof Your Career & Professional Life

The job market has been a little funky over the last year(ish) and we are alllll really feeling it. Even as a creator I am seeing a shift this year in consumer behavior, brand behavior, and overall sentiment towards the online space. It’s a good example that no career is truly recession-proof.

All this to say, the status of the economy and the job market is outside of out control. And as you know, I like to focus my attention on the things that I can control.

In tandem with last week’s email, today I am going to share a few ways you can help recession-proof your career!

Let’s get into it.

1️⃣ Double down on transferable and soft skills

Transferable skills are professional currency; these are skills that can be leveraged across a variety of jobs and industries (think data analysis, project management, copywriting, etc)

Soft skills are the non-technical skills you have, like your ability to communicate effectively, build relationships, manage your time, and stay productive.

Action Steps:

  • List out your current skillset

  • Identify a few areas to focus on

  • Dedicate weekly time to actually work on them

What I am doing: I am focused on developing my content creation skills through different styles of content and expanding into lifestyle content. I am also developing NEW skills - specifically related to live media and events.

2️⃣ Up-level Your Network & Digital Image

Many (if not, most) jobs are filled through networking. Your network is your net worth, and whether you are seeking a new job or not - you should always be developing and nurturing your network!

Action Step:

  • Start saying yes to events! Push yourself out of your comfort zone

  • Schedule a coffee chat with someone new once per month

  • Update your online profiles! (specifically: LinkedIn)

What I am doing: I am taking most in-person opportunities that come my way! And I make an effort to reach out to one new person per month to schedule a coffee date. This has been fun in a new city!

3️⃣ Start Task Tracking

Task-tracking is for you!! Not your employer. When you keep track of the work you’re doing, as well as the value-add of that work, it makes it easier to update your resume, interview confidently, and advocate for yourself during important career conversations.

Action Steps:

  • Get the Own Your Career Template

  • Set aside 5 minutes daily to write your to-dos & value-adds

  • Spend 10 minutes weekly identifying your top 3 accomplishments

What I’m doing: I keep track of my daily tasks and projects, as well as the work that generates the most ROI for me (revenue, engagement, visibility, etc). Every month, I set new goals based on the insights I’ve gathered!

You can start task-tracking inside the OWN YOUR CAREER Template! You can also use the code 3YEARS for 25% off this template this week only ❤️
