MONEY
3 Step Process to Audit Your Finances This Month

The top of a new month perfectly aligns with Break Your Budget Weekly (Tuesday) so I am obligated to run you through my signature 3-step monthly money retrospective!

I’ve followed the exact same financial system for over 5 years and it’s made me feel more confident and secure in my financial position.

It’s 3 simple steps:

  • Updating my numbers

  • Self-reflecting on my spend

  • Creating a budget for next month

Having this signature system to manage and audit your finances makes possible to:

  • Get (and stay) financially organized

  • Feel more confident in your decision-making

  • Reach your goals faster

  • Spend freely and intentionally

  • Grow your net worth to $100K+

Grab your financial management tool of choice, and let’s get into it!

1️⃣ Update all your numbers

I like to track my expenses weekly, but at the end of the month I also track my savings/investment transfers, and debt payoff, and my net worth.

This provides a monthly snapshot in time of your financial picture, and you can clearly see:

  • How much you spent

  • How much you saved

  • What needs to change

Time Commitment: 10-15 minutes

2️⃣ Self-reflect

This is the step most people skip, but it’s the most important. Self-reflection is how you change your behavior.

Ask yourself:

  • What went well this month?

  • What could be better next month?

  • Am I proud of my progress?

  • Do I need to make any changes?

Time Commitment: 5-10 minutes

3️⃣ Create your budget for next month

The last step is creating your budget for the next month. I have a baseline budget I project month-to-month, and I use this time to make adjustments to it based on any upcoming plans.

  • Am I traveling?

  • Do I have any celebrations?

  • Is there a purchase I’ve been wanting to make?

Time Commitment: 5-10 minutes

A monthly money routine is an integral part of a healthy and successful financial system. If you spend 40 hours a week earning your money, you can spend 30 minutes per MONTH managing it!
